Woodcarving is as old as humankind's desire to depict the world. It has been an important component of American art since early colonial times. Of course, woodcarving is found in every great culture from Europe, Asia and Africa, and immigrants from these lands added to our cultural richness. My carvings show influences from Appalachian figure carving, European folk and classical carving and Japanese netsuke carving. My work is a link to the past. And, I wish to preserve an artistic heritage. In this age of impersonal (and toxic) technologies woodcarving is fast becoming a lost artform, which is unfortunate considering woodcarving is one of the "greenest" of the arts. No dangerous chemicals are needed in traditional woodcarving, and the wood chip waste created in carving is completely bio-degradable. And these miniature sculpture are doubly "green". A single tree could be made into hundreds of books that wind up collecting dust, unread, on bookshelves. Or, a single tree could be made into hundreds of sculptures that will be admired with each viewing. These miniature pieces average 5 inches tall, and are carved in maple, birch, walnut or fruitwood. Each carving is unique - using only knive, sandpaper and paste wax or stain for a finish. They are presented as stereograms in order to let you get a sense of them in three-dimensions. Miniatures makes collecting art easy and affordable. |
